At least one dead after explosions hit Communist Party headquarters in northern China

At least one person was killed and another eight were injured after a series of explosions took place outside the headquarters of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party in the Chinese city of Taiyuan.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, the explosive devices were packed with metal balls and were hidden in roadside flower displays.
At around 7:40 a.m. witnesses heard at least seven explosions,saw a column of black smoke filling the avenue and heard bursts of fire.
According to the Daily Telegraph there were conflicting reports over the exact number of explosions. The Beijing Youth Daily reported at least seven explosions while another account, later deleted by censors from Weibo, claimed there had been four blasts.
CCTV reported that more than 20 cars were damaged, some with broken windows and flat tyres.
From photos circulating on Chinese social media sites, the buildings where the devices exploded did not sustain any damage.
Because metal balls were scattered throughout the scene, police believe improvised explosive devices were used for the attack.
One of the injured is in serious condition.
The attack comes just over a week after an SUV exploded in Beijing's
Tiananmen Square, killing five people, and a few days before Saturday's gathering of top leaders in Beijing aimed at discussing key reforms for the country.
