Turkish paramilitary officers seized 1,000 kg of chemicals at a border crossing as smugglers tried to transport the materials into Syria on Saturday (November 2). The seizure took place near a the Turkish town of Reyhanli.

A convoy of three vehicles refused to stop at the checkpoint, prompting officers to shoot at the tires to stop them. When the tires caught fire, the drivers jumped out and fled in the direction of Syria. One of the drivers was stopped by officers and arrested, while the other two managed to escape.

Turkish border guards found 20 bags of sulphur, each weighing about 50 kg, inside the cars. Eight sealed barrels were also inside the vehicles. The contents of the barrels was not immediately known. Specialists will examine the sulphur and other unidentified substances found inside the vehicles.
