A man fell out of a private plane in midair with no parachute into the ocean near Miami on Thursday (November 14).

The incident took place about 13 km southeast of Tamiami Airport and 3 km from the shore. The pilot of a Piper PA46 private plane sent an emergency call to Miami Terminal Radar Approach Control at 1:30 p.m., reporting that the passenger of the plane had opened the door and fell out of the plane.

It was not clear whether the passenger accidentally fell out of the plane or deliberately jumped. According to the Los Angeles Times, the passenger and the pilot were the only people on board the plane. Police did not disclose the names of the passenger and the pilot.

A search for the passenger conducted by Miami-Dade police, fire rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard began on Thursday afternoon in the area off the shores of Key Biscayne but was without success. The search was temporarily halted but is expected to resume on Friday morning.

It was reported that the pilot has been cooperating with police and remained at the airport for hours. Homicide detectives are also investigating the incident, but there has not been any indication of foul play.
