Libyan intelligence officer assassinated in Benghazi car bombing

A Libyan military intelligence officer who was the victim of a bomb attack on his car on Saturday has died in hospital early Sunday morning. Col Kamal Bazaza was driving a four door Kia sedan on busy Jamal Abdul Nasr street in Benghazi on Saturday when a small bomb hidden under the driver's seat exploded. Bazaza survived the explosion and was pulled from the vehicle. He was then rushed to Jelaa hospital where he underwent four hours of emergency surgery to save his leg. Doctors had given him a 70 percent chance of recovery but by Sunday morning, Col Bazaza had succumbed to his wounds and died.
Col Bazaza is thought to have been targeted because of his investigations into suspected terrorists active in Libya. His killing comes two days after an American high school chemistry teacher was shot to death while jogging on the street, also in Benghazi. Ronnie Smith was gunned down on Thursday as he was exercising in the Libyan city of Benghazi where he worked as a chemistry teacher for the last year and a half, security sources and school officials said. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.
Libya's government is struggling to contain former fighters and militants who, two years after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, are challenging a fragile state that is still building a national army with Western aid.
