49 Myanmar immigrants caught in Malaysia

Forty-nine illegal immigrants from Myanmar were caught on Tuesday (December 10) in Malaysia after walking more than 100 km from across the border from Thailand to Laka Selatan.
According to the New Straits Times, the group of 49 illegal immigrants comprised of 43 men, three women, two boys and a girl and were aged between 7 and 50. The group reportedly spent eight nights in the jungle, with only one meal each day and rain for drinking water.
The group reportedly was told to camp in Laka Selatan after crossing the border. They then split up and walked in small groups to avoid detection by police. However, Bukit Kayu Hitam police rounded up the immigrants when they left their jungle hideout and they were caught at separate locations between Monday night and early Tuesday.
Each of the immigrants paid RM 3,000 to a syndicate to smuggle them into Malaysia. A 23-year-old Thai national was arrested. It is believed that he is working for the syndicate to lead the Myanmar immigrants into Malaysia.
None of the immigrants had travel documents. They reportedly planned to get jobs and settle down in Malaysia.
