Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra refuses to step down

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra insisted on Tuesday she would not resign before next February's election. In a teary- eyed speech, Shinawatra refused to step down in response to an ultimatum set by the opposition Democrat Party which demands her resignation within 24 hours .

In hopes of mitigating the opposition's anger, Shinawatra announced her decision to dissolve the lower house of Parliament on Monday and declared herself caretaker prime minister until an election is held next February.

Her attempts appear to have thus far failed, however, and an estimated 7,000 protesters meanwhile remain outside the Prime Minister's compound.
