At least seven passengers died and 10 were injured in a bus crash that occurred on a freeway in western Mexico close to 2 a.m. on Wednesday (December 19).

The bus departed Guadalajara and was headed for the port city Lazaro Cardenas of Michoacan state when it crashed into a cargo truck parked on the shoulder of the 21st Century Freeway.

Six people, including a 3-year-old boy, were killed at the scene while the seventh victim died after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

The injured were sent to Uruapan and Arteaga for medical care while the drivers of the two vehicles reportedly fled the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that the speed of the bus may have been a factor in the accident.
