Police shootout: six militants killed in gun battle with Indonesian police

Indonesian police shot dead six suspected terrorists and arrested another in a raid that took place on New Year's Eve near the capital of Jakarta.

According to a National Police spokesman, a police squad led by the counter-terrorism unit Detachment 88 surrounded a house in Ciputat on Tuesday evening (December 31). Police told suspected militants inside to surrender, but they refused and opened fire, forcing officials to return fire. The gun battle last hours until the morning, and six suspected militants were killed.

Police arrested one militant and seized firearms and explosive materials from the house.

The suspected militants were thought to have been involved in several terror activities in 2013, including shooting police officers, according to the police spokesman.
