Three people, including the suspect, were killed in a shooting at an Indiana supermarket on Wednesday night (January 15).

The suspect, in his late teens or early 20s, was reported to have been armed with a handgun and a large knife when he entered Martin's Super Market in Elkhart, Indiana, at around 10 p.m. Police said the suspect lived in the area.

Two victims, a female employee in her late teens or early twenties and a female shopper in her forties, were killed before the police arrived on scene.

The suspect was pointing his gun at a store employee when Elkhart police found him in the store. Several rounds were fired, and the suspect was gunned down by the police.

"We are pretty confident that Elkhart's quick response to the scene most definitely saved lives tonight," Sgt. Trent Smith of the Indiana State Police said regarding the Elkhart Police Department's response to the initial 911 call at a press conference early on Thursday, according to a WNDU report.

The bodies of the two female victims were found 10 to 12 aisles apart. Police are studying surveillance footage to determine if the shooting was random or targeted.
