A bomb exploded on a bus carrying Shi'ite pilgrims in Pakistan on Tuesday (January 22), killing at least 22 people and injuring more than 30.

The attack took place about 55 km southwest of Quetta, the provincial capital, near Dirangar village in Mastung in western Pakistan. Two buses, escorted by security personnel, were carrying 103 pilgrims returning from Iran to Quetta.

Balochistan Home Secretary Asad Gillani told the Express Tribune that it was a suicide attack. The paper quotes an unnamed "senior security official" as saying that a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into one of the two buses.

Around 100 kg of explosive materials were used in the blast, a Bomb Disposal Squad official told the Express Tribune, damaging both buses and four other vehicles, including cars used by security personnel. The blast killed at least 22 people, many of them were women and children. More than 30 people were also injured by the blast.

An earlier report by AFP said Bomb Disposal Squad officials suspected that the bomb was planted on the roadside and detonated remotely.

Pakistani terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Jhangvi reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack and said they will carry out more such attacks in the future.
