Denmark giraffe controversy: Second zoo plans to kill giraffe called Marius

Mere days after the grim, public death of an 18-month-old giraffe named Marius at a zoo in Denmark's capital, a second Danish zoo has announced that it may too put down one of its giraffes, according to Danish news agency Ritzau.

Animals lovers the world over reacted in outrage on Sunday after Copenhagen Zoo slaughtered a healthy young giraffe and carried out a gruesome public dissection for all to see.

The Danish Jyllands Park Zoo, located in western Denmark said on Wednesday that if it goes ahead with plans to acquire a female giraffe it will have to put down one of its two male giraffes, a seven-year-old, coincidentally also named Marius.

A representative for the institution, which also has a younger male called Elmer, told local media that killing surplus animals is not an uncommon practice in Danish zoos.

The zoo has sadly not yet ruled out the possibility of carrying out a public dissection similar to the one in Copenhagen.
