Pakistan explosion: Bomb blast in Karachi kills 11 policemen

A bomb attack near the southern port city of Karachi on Thursday (February 13) targeting a bus full of Pakistani policemen killed 11 people and injured at least 33.
According to reports in Pakistani media, the attack took place near the Razzaqabad Police Training Center in Shah Latif Town. More than 50 policemen were on the bus, which was leaving the training center and heading to Bilawal House.
Initially, police said the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber. Other reports indicate the police bus was making a U-turn when a small van struck it and caused the explosion.
According to a report by SamaaTV, when a bomb disposal squad visited the site to collect evidence, they determined that the explosion had been caused by a remote-controlled IED fitted on the roof of a van. The van was parked at the side of the road. When the bus approached it, the bomb was detonated. The explosion completely destroyed the bus.
Semi Jamali, head of the emergency department at the city's Jinnah Medical Center, said 47 officers were hospitalized, according to a report by the Business Recorder. Ten officers are in critical conditions, she said. Several civilians also sustained injuries.
The bomb attack comes amid peace talks between Taliban representatives and the government aimed at trying to end Pakistan's violent insurgency.
