Japan is planning to seek $139,600 in compensation from the captain of a Chinese trawler that crashed into two Japanese patrol ships in disputed waters in the East China Sea in 2010.

The Japanese government will file a lawsuit against Zhan Qixiong in a local court in Naha, Okinawa. Japan says Zhan rammed two Japanese vessels after ignoring repeated warnings to leave the area.

The incident occurred near the Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands. China also claims the islands, which it calls the Diaoyu.

On September 7, 2010, a Japanese coast guard patrol ship attempted to stop Zhan's trawler, the Minjinyu 5179, as it was fishing near the disputed islands. Zhan ignored the request and steered his trawler away.

The Japanese sent two other patrol boats, the Mizuki and the Hateruma, to chase after the Chinese boat. Zhan rammed two Japanese coast guard vessels before the Minjinyu was boarded and Zhan was taken into custody along with 14 crew members.

Tokyo's already frosty relationship with Beijing worsened considerably after the incident and Japan's subsequent two-week detention of Zhan.

In footage leaked on YouTube months later, the trawler was seen ramming into the patrol boats. Beijing insisted that the video was edited and does not reflect the truth.

Zhan was released after being detained in Japan for more than two weeks.
