Five were killed when a truck carrying blast cartridges exploded following a collision on a South African expressway early Thursday morning (February 27).

A grocery truck rear-ended a truck carrying blast cartridges on the N1 expressway running between Mokopane and Polokwane in Limpopo at around 2 a.m.

Police arrived on scene to rescue a trapped truck driver as the vehicles caught fire and exploded. Four officers and the driver were killed. Three other policemen and three other motorists were also injured from the blast.

The explosion left a crater on the road which has now been cordoned off as officials investigate the incident.

"It's a very tragic accident that took place. We are still trying to put the pieces together as to what might have caused the accident. We have all the numbers from the forensic division and we have also dispatched our psychologists and pastors in the South African police Service (SAPS) to go and visit the families of the deceased," Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said in an SABC report.

A dangerous goods transportation expert, Keith McMurray, said there is no regulation against explosives being transported at night.

"Because it was dark, it was probably very difficult for the first responders (the police), to follow normal procedure in first identifying what the truck was carrying," McMurray said in an International Online News report.
