This animation is based on Oscar Pistorius' court affidavit signed on February 19, 2013, in which he explains that he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after mistaking her for an intruder. This animation is an update of an animation originally published on February 20, 2013 and republished on March 3, 2014. Other media reports were consulted to more accurately recreate certain visual details such as the bullet holes in Pistorius' bathroom door.

The South African Olympic and Paralympic track star' signed affidavit was read to a Pretoria courtroom during a bail hearing on Feb. 19, 2013 after he was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home on Feb. 14 of the same year.

In the affidavit Pistorius denied murdering Steenkamp and said he shot her after mistaking her for an intruder. The statement, read by his lawyer, told the court how Pistorius heard a noise coming from the bathroom and shot through the toilet door four times. Only after shooting did he realize that Steenkamp was not in bed and that the person he had shot may have been his girlfriend.

Pistorius then broke down the locked door with a cricket bat in an attempt to save her. Steenkamp died shortly afterwards from gunshot wounds.

This updated animation uses a more accurate model of the door to the toilet in Pistorius' Pretoria home. It adds, based on the affidavit, scenes showing Pistorius and Steenkamp's activities before the shooting, a scene that shows Pistorius first trying to kick open the door, and a scene in which Pistorius phones property manager Johan Stander to call an ambulance.
