Panama's aero-naval service said on Monday (March 10) that it seized roughly 2.5 tons of cocaine in an operation launched last Friday.

A patrolling helicopter sent for two boats to intercept a speed boat spotted near Panama's Tiger Island in the Caribbean. As the naval ships drew near, the crew aboard the speedboat dumped the packages containing cocaine into the sea before speeding away in the direction of Colombia .

Authorities picked up 61 packages containing 1,525 kg of cocaine. All were transported to Panama Pacifico Airport for further testing.

Panama's Air and Navy Service, also known as SENAN, has seized 1,725 kg of drugs and has destroyed some 4,083 marijuana plants this year.
