A Dominican citizen was arrested in Puerto Rico on Thursday along with 1.5 tons of cocaine, according to the Puerto Rico police.

Reports said the man was arrested along the coast near the town of Patillas after his 40-foot boat had run aground.

Police said they received an anonymous phone-call and arrived at the scene, where they arrested the man and confiscated the boat and a nearby vehicle.

A total of 1.5 tons or 1,400kg of cocaine were found on the boat.

Puerto Rico has become a key transit point for cocaine traveling from Colombia and Venezuela to the US in recent years. It is then shipped to the US east coast onboard planes or in containers.

Local police and the FBI are investigating the find.
