Deputy John Logan shoots Memphis construction worker Mark Martinez six times, isn't charged.
A badly injured man wants to know why an off-duty Mississippi deputy hasn't been charged after shooting him six times during a bar fight.
Mark Martinez had just moved to Memphis for a construction job and was out on the town, already very drunk.
Thought he can't remember, a girl says Martinez groped her and it's was probably his wandering hand which started the crazy brawl to come involving off-duty deputy John Logan.
The fight exploded; a homeless guy even jumped in. Logan pistol-whipped Martinez.
Witnesses say Logan received beating and found himself on the ground. He fired on Martinez, striking his legs, back and arms.
Martinez woke up hours later in hospital. Police later found a pistol strapped to Logan's ankle and a knife in his pocket.
Martinez says he's never been in a fight and his family is demanding to know how six shots constitutes self defense, which is Logan's reason for firing the gun. And police are rallying around their guy who only joined the force in December; Logan has been placed on paid leave and has not been charged with any crime because, says the District Attorney's office, it's not clear who started what.
In the words of Martinez's mother words: "they are doing nothing, because he's a cop, and we are Hispanic."
