Jordan said its air force destroyed several vehicles trying to cross the border from Syria on Wednesday, according to a Reuters report.

"There was an attempt to infiltrate across the border from Syria by a number of vehicles," said Mohammad al-Momani, a spokesman of the Jordanian government.

The targets were Syrian rebels in civilian vehicles mounted with machine guns who were trying to enter the kingdom.

As the cars ignored warning shots and continued to advance, the Jordanian warplanes destroyed the vehicles.

Jordan is increasingly worried about infiltration of armed groups from Syria. "We are worried about cases of infiltration ... and reports that talk about armed groups that are close to the border and the absence of security there," said al-Momani.
