A 72-year-old grandmother has become the latest casualty in Brazil's battle for control over lawless slum neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.
A gunbattle broke out on Sunday evening at the Complexo do Alemao housing project in Rio.
Heavily-armed police patrolling the notorious slum area encountered suspected drug gang members, and a fierce firefight broke out.
Police say Dalva Arlinda Beserra de Assis, a 72-year-old woman escorting her grandson home from school, was hit and killed by a stray bullet during the firefight.
After the incident, young men from the neighborhood barricaded a major road in protest, but no further injuries or deaths were reported.
With just weeks till the 2014 World Cup kicks off in Brazil, authorities have stepped up a campaign to bring slum areas under government control after decades of de facto rule by gang lords and drug barons.
