Part of a 1000-pound oil wellhead suffered a pressure explosion in Texas early Wednesday.

Repairs to an oil well in a remote western area of the U.S. state of Texas turned deadly on April 30.

Some 15 workers in Loving County were attempting to install a wellhead early Wednesday morning, when a pressure explosion occurred, sending shrapnel and debris flying over a wide area.

Two workers were killed. Nine others were wounded.

Cell phones cannot be used in the remote location where the accident happened, and reports say one of the workers had to drive 6 miles in order to be able to get a cell signal to call for help.

Wednesday's fatal accident was the first such incident this year in Loving County, an area in west Texas that has seen a spike in drilling and oil production over recent years.
