At least twenty-two people drown after two boats carrying illegal immigrants capsized in the Aegean Sea.

The boats capsized around four nautical miles from the Greek island of Samos, close to the Turkish coast.

The yacht and the dinghy were estimated to be carrying between 60-65 people when they overturned.

Coast guard vessels and fishing boats joined in the rescue, pulling 36 survivors from Somalia, Eritrea and Syria from the water.

While 22 bodies were recovered from the water and from inside the upturned yacht.

Greece has seen a large increase in immigrants arriving from Turkey by sea in the past year after tightening controls on the land border between the two countries.

Authorities do not yet know the nationality of the dead migrants. The Greek coast guard said it was not clear what had caused the boat to capsize.
