An unidentified gunman opened fire on a car from the U.S. Consulate in Afghanistan on Wednesday, injuring two Americans.
The car was headed for the airport and travelling through the western city of Herat. A gunman on a motorcycle fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the consular vehicle in Enjeel district, AFP reported.
The U.S. Embassy confirmed that two Americans sustained minor injuries, but did not provide any further details. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
The comes one day after President Obama announced to keep 9,800 troops in Afghanistan through 2015, a reversal of the US government's plan to withdraw all troops in the restive country by the end of this year.
The Taliban has condemned the move, branding it a "violation of sovereignty, religion and human rights".
The incident follows an attack last Friday in which four assailants launched an attack on the Indian Consulate in the same city. Two gunmen were killed in the firefight, but no one else was injured.
