Reports say an American citizen has become the first U.S. national to be killed in the Syrian civil war.

Little is known about an American national who is believed to be the first suicide bomber in Syria, except that he somehow made his way from the United States to Syria and linked up with the jihadist group Al-Nusra.

The man, whose birth name or hometown remain unknown, was filmed wearing a suicide vest along with other rebels. Jihadist websites reportedly claimed the American was of Palestinian descent.

And on Sunday, the American is believed to have participated in a suicide truck bombing in Syria.

The truck, filled with explosives and shells, was driven into a Syrian town and detonated on May 25.

The suicide bombing in Idlib Province leveled much of the town. The total number of dead is unknown.

If confirmed, the American would be the first to have died in a suicide attack against Syrian government forces.
