A man went on a shooting rampage at Seattle Pacific University on Thursday afternoon, killing one person and injuring three others.

The lone shooter entered Otto Miller Hall, the university's science, engineering and math building, shortly before 3:30 p.m and opened fire at students in the foyer.

As the assailant stopped to reload his shotgun, a student working as a building monitor pepper-sprayed him and knocked him to the ground. Other students took the opportunity, jumping on top of the gunman and disarming him.

The student who tackled the gunman was identified as Jon Meis, a 22-year-old studying engineering at the small Christian university, which has about 4,000 students.

The shooting claimed the life of one 20-year-old man, while three others were injured, with one in a critical condition.

The unidentified shooter is now in police custody. KIRO TV, a Seattle-based broadcaster, reported the suspect as Aaron Ybarra, a 26-year-old man who is not a student at the university.

There was initial confusion over the identity of the student who tackled the gunman, as police at first believed he was a second shooter.
