Hosts Brazil got the start they needed, but didn't necessarily deserve, in the opening game of the World Cup Thursday, eventually overcoming a stubborn Croatia side 3-1 thanks to two goals from goal-den boy Neymar."

After a slow start, underdogs Croatia took a shock lead on 11 minutes thanks to the first ever World Cup own goal by a Brazil player when Marcelo sliced into his own net.

But a nervous-looking Brazil side eventually got back on level terms when Barca star Neymar, scuffed a shot from about 30 meters out that trickled past the despairing dive of Croatian goalkeeper Pletikosa.

With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Brazil looked like they needed some divine intervention. But instead they got some help from the officials, as with 70 minutes gone the Japanese referee awarded Brazil a spot kick for an innocuous challenge on Fred, much to the disbelief of the Croatia players.

Up stepped Neymar to score from the penalty spot.

The impressive Oscar then added the icing on the cake for the hosts in the last minute with a toe-poked shot.
