75 scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta are being treated with drugs after they were put at risk of potential Anthrax exposure. The problem was discovered last Friday when live anthrax bacteria were found on lab materials being gathered for disposal.

The scare came after a worker failed to follow proper procedures when deactivating Anthrax bacteria while preparing samples for experiments in a biosecurity lab. The samples, which may have contained live bacteria, were then transferred to three lower-security CDC labs not equipped to handle live anthrax.

The normal incubation period is five to seven days, though there are documented cases of the illness occurring up to 60 days after exposure. Symptoms include fever and chills, shortness of breath, confusion or dizziness, and headache.

After the discovery, the agency quickly began contacting workers who may have unknowingly handled live anthrax bacteria. 75 workers are being offered a 60-day course of treatment with the antibiotic ciprofloxacin and an anthrax vaccine injection.

None of the workers have yet shown any symptoms, Dr Paul Meechan, CDC director of the environmental health and safety compliance, said.
