Man throws gasoline on wife and tries to light it, tells cops he was 'just joking'

A man from Sunrise, Florida is being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill after he threatened his wife with knives and tried to ignite gasoline that he says he "accidentally" spilled on her and her bed.
Khemraj Samlall, 43, and his wife argued early Sunday morning when he came home drunk after a night out with friends. according to Sunrise Police Officer Justin Bromberg's report, she had told him he was a bad father for not spending time with their 9-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son.
Samlall, a maintenance worker who does not have a criminal record has been accused of pointing two knives at his wife and threatening to kill her.
The police report added that the son saw his father get a red gas can from the backyard, bring it into the house and throw fuel on his mother. However, Samlall has denied pouring gasoline on his wife and the bed, saying that the spill was accidental. Apparently the "accidental" spill was quite large, as Bromberg's report said that fumes inside the home were so strong, he became light-headed and had to go outside.
Samlall has admitted to wanting to "scare her [his wife], so she would stop bothering" him. Samlall also told police that he took a lighter from a pocket and tried to light the gasoline "as a joke" while winking at his son.
In court Monday before Broward Judge John "Jay" Hurley, Samlall's wife cried and defended him as "a great guy" and good husband and father. She initially said she was afraid of her husband of 16 years, but after seeing him in custody, she didn't want to prosecute.
However, Judge Hurley ordered a $1 million bond for Samlall, saying that "the court has no doubt that if that lighter would have sparked, you wouldn't be here right now."
