Paul Gerlach and Louis Borzoni were sentenced to life in jail for the murder of Rico Dardis, when they intentionally ran him over with their motorboat on May 27.
The three men were seen arguing about cigarettes and booze walking along the beach of Christchurch Bay. The argument became physical once they hit the water.
Gerlach said Dardis assaulted him and Borzoni and that's why they pushed him overboard. They circled around, yelling taunts at their victim before driving the motorboat directly over Dardis, dismembering the 30-year-old's legs in the process.
"I just whacked the throttle down," said Gerlach in a secretly recorded conversation with his estranged wife, "and I'm not remorseful."
The motor was left inoperable and the men drifted in. A witness snapped a picture of the bloodied killers as they attempted to remove a leg entangled in the propeller.
A couple passing by noticed a torso floating on the water. Borzoni said: "Oh, maybe it's a dummy." They abandoned the vessel to grab some drinks and were arrested when they returned.
Both defendants pleaded not-guilty, claiming the death to be accidental. They were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison after their confessions were secretly recorded by prosecutors.
Rico Dardis was an aspiring freestyle rapper and father of one.
