A sand-filled truck that had lost control of its brakes and plowed into 10 vehicles on a mountain route in Santa Cruz, resulting in a pile-up that spanned up to a quarter of a mile on Highway 17 on Thursday morning, according to a KTVU report.

While other vehicles crawled at around 15 miles per hour during morning commute, a big rig pulling a double load drove up to the traffic at a speed of around 50 or 60 miles per hour.

According to a witness, the truck clipped two cars about 20 yards up the road, then plowed into the traffic before finally crashing through a guard rail. One person was killed after being ejected from a Honda. Eight others were injured.

The California Highway Patrol called the wreckage a "very graphic, horrific scene... like a war zone." The mountain road is a major traffic route between Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz. Its northbound lanes remained closed until about 5 p.m.
