A freaky accident happened last Friday afternoon when 12-year-old William Tattersall from Blackpool, Lancashire almost severed an artery in his forearm after impaling himself on a door handle.

Little William was running in the hallway of his home and as he was rushing past a door, he felt a dull pain, and somehow, his forearm got impaled by the door handle. The door handle, a type that is found in most homes, was luckily millimeters away from a major artery in William's arm and did not draw any blood while lodged inside the arm.

The boy's mother, Alex, and older brother, James, are both nurses and were at home to tend to William. Paramedics and firefighters arrived at the scene to remove the handle from the door.

How the arm got impaled is still unclear, however, the wound was only about the size of a 10 pence piece, and required only 4 stitches. The family is still in shock as to what had happened.

William was said to have been very calm and brave throughout the whole incident. Mom added that "I could see from the way it had gone in it wasn't going to do any lasting damage. It wasn't gory, it was so neatly in it was as if it had been professionally put there."

William was given enough painkillers before the handle was carefully extracted. He is now recovering at his home, and the family is in the process of replacing all the door handles.
