MH17 crash: large debris field suggests missile attack brought down Malaysia Airlines over Ukraine

After Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed in rural eastern Ukraine near Donetsk on July 17, military and aviation experts around the world have been asking the same question: what happened?

According to some military analysts, before the fallen plane's debris are analyzed for chemical characteristics, the scattering pattern of the broken pieces has already revealed some concrete information. Specifically, MH17's large debris field - which covers a 10 mile diameter - suggests that the plane had exploded at a high altitude. The information leads to number of possible causes for the plane crash: a bomb aboard, a fuel tank explosion, or that the plane was shot down by a ground-to air missile.

One weapon that the US government speculates as being responsible for the shot is a Buk missile system. The Buk has a target range of up to 80,000 ft above ground, meaning the plane, which was cruising at 33,000 ft above ground seconds before it was shot down, was well within the missile's reach.

However, the speculations can only be confirmed by analyzing the debris for the chemical characteristics of the explosives that caused the explosion.
