Malaysia flight MH17 crash: Asiana, Korea Air, Qantas have adjusted flight paths over Ukraine
  • 9 years ago
Several international airlines have already adjusted their flight paths to avoid passing through Ukrainian air space amid the mounting tensions between Kiev and pro-Russian rebels, months before Malaysia flight MH17 was shot down in eastern Ukraine on Thursday.

All 298 people onboard the flight was killed in what is believed to be a ground-launched missile strike.

Following the crash, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said that "based on information currently available it is believed that the airspace that the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions," according to Reuters. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an order prohibiting U.S. aircraft from flying in certain airspace over the Crimean region.

Absorbing additional operating costs, Asiana and Korea Air Lines shifted their flight path some 150 kilometres below Ukrainian airspace on March 3 this year.

Qantas has also said that it moved its London-Dubai flight route some 740 kilometres south of Ukraine several months ago.

Meanwhile, several other airlines have continued to fly the route. Radar data reveals an Air India flight just 24 miles away from the Malaysia flight at the incident.
