Hamas has constructed around 60 tunnels along the Gaza-Israel border, images captured by American satellites have shown, according to a report by the Jerusalem Post .
Israel said the tunnels were surprisingly well equipped, with cables for electricity and enough food and supplies to enable the occupants to stay underground for several months.
Hamas militants, often dressed in Israeli army uniform, use the tunnels to enter Israel from Gaza and launched surprise attacks on Israeli army patrols in an attempt to kill or kidnap Israeli soldiers.
Israel has not yet determined the total number of burrows Hamas has built, but said it has already discovered 36. One of the newly discovered tunnels measured up to 2.4 kilometres in length. Each tunnel costs approximately one million US dollars to excavate and maintain
Apart from tunnels connecting to Israel for assaults, Hamas has also built tunnels for other uses. Some of these burrows link Gaza and Egypt, so that Hamas militants can bring in supplies and firearms. Others serve as escape routes for Hamas leaders and their families, with some of them built exclusively for the most senior leaders.
