Man buried alive in sand tunnel collapse at Half Moon Bay beach, California
  • 9 years ago
A 26-year-old California man is dead after a sand hole he was digging at the beach collapsed on top of him, burying him alive.

Adam Pye dug a 10 ft deep hole at Francis State Beach and was standing in it around 5.30 p.m. Monday when the sand started caving in around him, officials said.

Around 30 volunteers used their hands, shovels, and buckets and in about five minutes, they were able to clear sand away from Pye’s head. Paramedics and rescue crews were able to pull Pye’s entire body from the sand with the hour, but despite performing life saving measures, Pye died at the scene.

Earlier this summer, a Virginia man died in a similar sand tunnel collapse in Outer Banks.
