At least 17 people were killed and 200 injured in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a crowded market in Gaza on Wednesday afternoon (July 30) during a 4-hour truce declared by the Israel Defense Forces.

From 1200 GMT on Wednesday, the Israeli forces called a 4-hour ‘humanitarian’ ceasefire. This caused confusion among civilians in Gaza, as the Israeli military said that the truce would “not apply to the areas in which Israeli soldiers are currently operating”. Hamas did not accept the truce and called it a “publicity stunt”.

But during the temporary truce, Israeli warplanes struck a market in Shejiaya, where hordes of Palestinians were shopping. According to the New York Times, shoppers believed the ceasefire meant that it would be temporarily safe for them to go to the market to replenish supplies.

A Palestinian photographer and civil defense worker were among the 17 people killed in the market air raid.

Hamas fired rockets on Tel Aviv and Ashkelon in retaliation of the market attack and an earlier shelling of a UN school in Jabalia, AFP reported. Israel said a rocket hit the open area near Tel Aviv, while two others were intercepted in Ashkelon.
