US General shot dead: New details of Afghanistan attack that killed General Harold Greene
  • 9 years ago
A clearer picture of how U.S. General Harold Greene was killed in Afghanistan has emerged one day after the green-on-blue attack.

The International Security Assistance Force delegation, of which Greene was a member, visited the National Military Academy of Afghanistan in Kabul to discuss a $70 million renovation project on Tuesday, NBC reported.

Afghan soldiers were told to return their weapons and stay in their rooms ahead of the delegation's visit. However, a 27-year-old soldier, later identified as Mohammad Rafiqullah, defied instructions. He took an M16 and hid in a bathroom.

The ISAF 35-vehicle motorcade arrived at the academy at 9:35 a.m. As the representatives were listening to a speech in an open area, Rafiqullah opened fire on the unsuspecting guests from a building 90 metres away. The attack was only stopped when Rafiqullah was shot in the head by a bodyguard.

The gunman had served in the Afghan army for more than two years. There is no indication that Greene was the specific target of the assault.
Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry denounced the gunman as “a terrorist in army uniform”, showing that the Afghan authorities believe Rafiqullah was an outsider infiltrating into the army.

“We do not view the incident at Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul yesterday as representative of the positive relationship which we have nurtured,” the International Security Assistance Force said in a statement.

Greene was the most senior U.S. military official to be killed in combat since the Vietnam War.
