Tooth growing inside nose: Saudi man with hyperdontia has bad dental problem causing nosebleeds

A Saudi man with hyperdontia learned that his health problems were related to an extra tooth that was growing into his nasal cavity.

The 22-year-old went to a doctor after getting nosebleeds about twice a month for three years. Upon inspection, the doctor notice an ivory white mass in the patient’s nasal cavity. The mass was determined to be a mesiodens, the most common type of supernumerary tooth.

Often found near incisor teeth, about a third of mesiodentes actually develop upside down, University of Iowa professor John Hellstein told Live Science. In some cases, the errant tooth may even protrude into the nasal cavity.

Doctors put the patient under general anesthesia and removed the 1 cm long tooth from the his nose. Three months later, the nosebleeds stopped and the patient was completely healed.

Hyperdontia, the condition of having extra teeth, affects less than 1 percent of all people.
