Italy jets collide: Two air force jets crash, exploded. Pilots remain missing

Four crew are missing after two Italian Air Force fighter jets collided in mid-air during a training exercise in central Italy, according to a Reuters report.

The two twin-engine Panavia Tornado aircraft crashed around 30 kilometres away from Ascoli on Tuesday afternoon, sparking a large forest fire, according to the BBC.

Each plane was reportedly carrying two crew members. All four managed to eject before the crash, reports said.

The exact cause of the crash remains unknown, but initial reports suggest the two jets had been flying at low altitudes and are believed to have touched wings.

No civilian casualties were reported on the ground, but the four crewmembers remain missing.
