Chicago hostage crisis: Harvey standoff ends with eight captives released, two arrested

Two people were arrested on Wednesday after allegedly holding six children and two women in a house hostage for nearly 24 hours outside Chicago.
According to NBC Chicago, the hostage situation began when police were called to the scene after two gunmen tried to break into a house in Chicago suburb of Harvey during an attempted robbery on Tuesday at around 12:48 p.m.
Upon spotting authorities, the gunmen opened fire wounding two officers, both in their arms.
According to NBC Chicago, one officer is scheduled for a Wednesday morning surgery, while the other officer suffered a graze wound and was treated on the scene.
After the shooting, the gunmen ran away and barricaded themselves in a nearby home, where they took hostage the six children and two women who were inside.
The children are four boys aged between one and 11 and two girls aged 6 and 12, Fox Chicago reported.
Police surrounded the house and after lengthy negotiations which were held through a window the gunmen agreed to leave one of the children on the house’s front porch, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Three more kids were also released that night, while the remaining hostages were freed by police on Wednesday after authorities swept through the front door of the house, found the suspects on the first floor and arrested them.
The hostages were recovered on the second floor, NBC Chicago reported.
