Selfie fail: romantic selfie couple blamed for stealing phone actually innocent

Unhappy parents want the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to clear their son’s name after recent selfies turned up on social media and news reports connecting him with a home burglary investigation.
Larry Beltran went to the Santa Clara Valley station on Wednesday with his son, Larry Betran Jr., to talk to authorities about the apparent stolen cellphone, but were told to come back on Thursday because the detective working the case had already gone home.
Police identified Beltran Jr. and his girlfriend as “people of interest” in a press release containing selfies of the young couple. Detectives released the photos because they believed it would help lead them to the burglars who broke into a Newhall home on July 30. Authorities said the selfie was discovered after the victim checked her cloud account and saw some pictures were uploaded of people she did not know.
Apparently, Beltran Jr.’s aunt, who also showed up at the station, told police that she bought two phone for $80 from a man at a swap meet and gave one of the phones to her nephew.
"I thought I got a good deal but I didn't know I put my nephew in a bad situation," said the aunt, Angie Cabrera.
The family was cooperating with the authorities at the station, deputies said. Officials declined to comment where Beltran Jr. was still considered a person of interest.
