Ebola cured: U.S. missionary doctors released from Atlanta’s Emory Hospital

Two American missionary doctors who contracted Ebola in Liberia have left hospital, after being declared free of the virus.

Marking the first time Ebola patients had been brought to the United States, the two doctors were flown separately in a private jet specially outfitted with medical quarantine pods, to Emory University hospital in the U.S. state of Georgia where they were given an experimental drug that could hold the key to helping defeat a major Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The unapproved drug, called ‘Zmapp,’ was created by infecting three mice with separate fragments of the Ebola virus.

The blood of each mouse then developed different strains of Ebola antibodies that were harvested and used to create Zmapp.

The successful treatment of the U.S. doctors is raising hopes that Ebola can be stopped in West Africa, where over 2400 cases and more than 1300 deaths have been reported.

One of the doctors, Dr. Kent Brantly, held a press conference as he was being discharged from Emory Hospital. Dr. Brantly, who appeared to be in perfect health, called his recovery “miraculous,” and said thanked those who hoped and prayed for him to survive.

The other doctor, Dr. Nancy Writebol, has declined to speak with the media, but her husband told news outlets that while she has been weakened by her fight against Ebola, she is was recovering well in an undisclosed location.

Dr. Writebol’s husband David Writebol issued a statement reading, “The lingering effects of the battle have left her in a significantly weakened condition. Thus, we decided it would be best to leave the hospital privately to be able to give her the rest and recuperation she needs at this time.”
