Apartment blaze: 4 children killed, 2 adults injured in Chicago fire

Four children are dead and two adults are hospitalized in critical condition after an apartment complex fire in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood broke out early Monday morning.

The fire started in the 18-unit apartment complex in the 11200-block of South Vernon Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Albert Miller was sleeping in his second floor apartment when he woke to his dog barking and his girlfriend saying they had to get out of the complex. They could see flames outside their window. Miller yelled to his neighbors to alert them. As Miller exited the front door, he saw two people jump from down from the third floor.

“As I was coming out of the front door, two people came flying out the window. A lady and a man hit the ground,” Miller said. “I tried to get to them, but the fire was just too bad.”

The two adults were taken to the Advocate Christ Medical Center after they lept from the third floor. They are listed in critical condition.

31-year-old Darlene Jones, who lives on the second floor, began banging on doors to alert her neighbors.

Four children were killed in the fire. Neighbors said they were 6-year-old girl, a 16-year-old girl and two boys, between the ages of 11 and 13.

They were found in the front bedroom of an apartment on the second floor. Fire officials said the fire appears to have started on that floor.

The fire was put out by 4:30 a.m. At least 50 people have been displaced from the courtyard building. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
