A 41-year-old man in Shenzhen, China, suffered burns to most of his body after his wife poisoned him last Thursday.

According to reports in local media, a 36-year-old Chinese woman identified only by her last name, Zhang, poured sulfuric acid into the mouth of her husband, surnamed Chen, while he was sleeping.

Chen suffered burns to more than 70 percent of his body, including his eyes, mouth and nose. His throat was so severely burned that he can no longer speak.

Chen’s younger sister said Zhang had been angry with Chen for sending money to his parents. Authorities said the couple also had a fight after Chen confessed to cheating on Zhang last week. They speculate that this could be why Zhang decided to poison her husband.

Zhang has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
