Bear attack: Rutgers senior killed by black bear in first New Jersey fatality in more than 150 years

A 22-year old senior was mauled to death by a bear in New Jersey on Sunday in what was the first fatality in the state for more than 150 years.

Rutgers senior Darsh Patel was hiking in Apshawa Preserve in northern New Jersey with four friends when they noticed a bear was following them.

The group decided to outrun the bear, but at some point Patel got separated from the group, possibly after twisting his ankle.

It was only when the friends regrouped later that they realized that Patel was missing and called the police.

A search team eventually found the 4-year old 300 pound bear circling Patel’s body after a three-hour long search. A police officer then shot and killed the bear.

West Milford police said that there were bite marks and claw marks on Patel’s body although the exact cause of death would be determined by an autopsy.

It is estimated that as many as 2,400 bears live in the forests of northern New Jersey.
