F-22 Raptor stealth fighter on its first combat mission against Islamic State

The F-22 raptor successfully completed its first combat mission on Monday in Syria, as the United States joined forces with five Arab countries in air strikes against Islamic State targets.
The Pentagon did not specify the targets hit by the fighter jet, but said the attack in which the jet participated lasted for several hours.

At $67 billion, the F-22 raptor program is one of the most expensive weapons project’s in the Pentagon’s history. It first entered service nine years ago, but has not participated in a combat mission till now.

The F-22 raptor, a stealth fighter jet, measures 62 feet long and has a wingspan of 44.5-feet.

The raptor is equipped with an M61A2 Vulcan 6-barrel Gatling cannon. It stores its weapons in three bays in its fuselage. For ground attacks, the warplane can carry two 1,000-pound JDAM bombs and two AIM-120C missiles in its center bay, while each of its side bays can also be loaded with an AIM-9M/X missile.

The F-22’s four wing pylons allow the aircraft to carry external fuel tanks for longer missions.

The stealth fighter jet is the first American warplane capable of flying at supersonic speeds without using an afterburner. Its speed can reach up to Mach 1.8 when the afterburner is used.

Its angular shape and high-tech construction makes it difficult for radar to detect.
