Hong Kong police deployed tear gas and pepper spray to try to disperse tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters who occupied the city’s financial district on Sunday.

The protests, originally led by student protesters, began on Friday in front of the Hong Kong government headquarters in Admiralty. Leaders of the Occupy Central movement joined the rally early Sunday and started a mass sit-in, according to the Guardian.

At first Police used pepper spray to try to clear the protesters. Then on Sunday, police fired tear gas into the crowds of protesters at least three times on Sunday afternoon and have threatened to use more force, the Guardian reported.

The HK Hospital authority said at least 41 people have been injured since the start of the protest, according to Apple Daily.
