Sacramento fatal car accident: Prius driving the wrong way on Highway 50 hits pickup truck

Four people are dead after a car driving the wrong way slammed into a pickup truck on Highway 50 early Wednesday morning in Sacramento, police said.

Officer Michael Bradley of the California Highway Patrol said a woman drove a Toyota Prius up an off ramp at Harbor Boulevard in West Sacramento and headed eastbound in the westbound lane for several miles, according to Capitol Public Radio News. Witnesses told local Fox affiliate KTXL they saw the Prius swerving before it slammed head-on into a pickup truck.

The truck spun and was hit by a Hyundai Sonata, causing the truck to burst into flames, Bradley said. The driver of the Hyundai told local NBC affiliate KCRA that he got out of his car to try to help the other victims of the accident but was unable to do so because the truck caught fire.

The driver of the Prius and three men in the truck died.

The accident took place at 2:24 a.m. on Highway 50 at Stockton Boulevard. It was first reported at 2:30 a.m., Bradley said, and three westbound lanes on Highway 50 near Stockton Boulevard were blocked. All lanes were reopened by 7:30 a.m., according to Capitol Public Radio News.
