Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi ‘wounded in airstrike,’ Pentagon not so sure

Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was reportedly seriously wounded in an airstrike in Iraq in March, according to an article published by the Guardian, although the Pentagon has not confirmed the report.

The Guardian reported that Baghdadi was wounded in an air strike on a three-car convoy in al-Baaj in Iraq, close to the Syrian border in March.

“Yes, he was wounded in al-Baaj near the village of Umm al-Rous on 18 March with a group that was with him,” Hisham al-Hashimi, an Iraqi official who advises Baghdad on the Islamic State, told the Guardian.

The air strike was targeting local IS leaders in the convoy and officials did not know Baghdadi was in one of the vehicles, the Guardian reported.

Baghdadi reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack but has made a slow recovery. However, he has not yet resumed day-to-day control of the terrorist group, according to the Guardian.

A Pentagon spokesman said that they were unable to confirm the report.
