A Philadelphia city police bicycle officer was shot in the right shoulder by a drug suspect on Thursday night.

Philadelphia city police bicycle officer Daniel Kostick was patrolling with a partner in the 19th District at about 10:15 p.m. They approached a white minivan with in connection with a suspected narcotics violation, according to Philly.com.

The van backed up and made a U-turn as the officers approached. Kostick pursued and caught up with the driver at 51st and Master Streets, Philly.com reported.

The driver reportedly said to Kostick ‘I don't want to have to do this’ before firing multiple times at him, who returned fire, according to Philly.com.

Investigators found the suspect, who was shot twice in the arm in a nearby alley. He was taken to a hospital where he remained in critical condition, Philly.com reported.
